Mark Minnich – New Concertmaster

Mark Minnich debuts as concertmaster October 18th. He
holds a Bachelors of Music degree in Violin Performance
from Bowling Green State University, as well as an MM in
Violin Performance and an MA in Music Theory and History
from Penn State.
From a small town near Toledo, Ohio, his first instrument
was piano,
“…although I was a terrible student- I didn’t practice
regularly, rarely listened to recordings, and had little
enthusiasm… but my teacher was very patient with me. I
took up violin because I’d heard it on a few different CDs and
loved the sound; after about a year of asking, my parents gave in and found me a
teacher, Anca Gavris, a Romanian violinist who was based in Napoleon, Ohio,
close to his home in Toledo.
I was part of a small youth orchestra that partnered with various organizations,
including Doctors Without Borders and Toledo, Ohio’s “Sister Cities” partnerships.
We’d go on medical and musical missions trips, through which the group was
also exposed to some diplomacy and business dealings. Although the orchestra
was for highschoolers, I maintained my involvement by serving as a coach, adviser,
and chaperone through my undergraduate degree and performing as a soloist.

An enthusiast of diverse musical styles, he has played in jazz combos, Latin rock
bands, new music ensembles and string quartets, as well as with the Manheim
Steamroller orchestra. He currently teaches violin, chamber ensembles and group
classes at the State College Suzuki program and The Grier School.
And… “In my free time I enjoy arranging music with my wife for our violin duo,
Revamped! (Check us out on YouTube and Facebook). Other creative outlets
include gardening and cooking, and I love spending time with our two cats, Arco
and Scherzo.”
