A message from the Executive Director...

The lights come down. You hear thundering applause as the conductor takes the stage. Everything is silent as the baton comes up and the musicians sit poised for the first notes of the concert to come. Together we take a breath, and…

The Williamsport Symphony is excited to be planning its 45th season! Can you believe it’s only 5 years until we are 50? Maestro Edelstein is putting the finishing touches on a concert series that will impress, excite, and move you musically and emotionally. It is through the work of our Maestro, our 70 accomplished musicians, our staff and board of directors, and the contributions of our wonderful donors and patrons that we are able to accomplish our mission – “to be a cultural asset to the community of Williamsport and the greater Susquehanna Valley by providing quality orchestral music, education, and performance opportunities for regional talent to an ever-expanding audience.”

We write to you today because we need your help to fund the amazing collection of performances and community outreach that the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra provides. Here is just a sampling of the types of programming for which your donations will immediately be used.

• Five regular season orchestral performances by the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra at the Community Arts Center
• Educational outreach to fund transportation and participation of public and private school students at our regular season performances
• Funding for the Williamsport Symphony Youth Orchestra – a dynamic organization providing orchestral experiences to advanced middle and high school musicians from our community
• Support for the Billtown Brass – a traditional brass band providing concerts in a range of venues and musical styles
• Guest Artists with international reputations who provide exciting performances and masterclasses at schools and universities throughout central Pennsylvania
• The Young Artist Competition – outstanding young musicians from the region compete for a chance to perform with the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra
• Summer Pops concerts in Williamsport and the surrounding areas

These are just a few of the things that make the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra a vital part of the quality of life, cultural awareness, and community outreach in our region. If we are able to realize an increase in our funding, we have plans to do even more in the coming year! We would like to bring a higher level of service to our community in the following ways:

• Increase our educational outreach opportunities in the public and private schools with presentations, small group performances, and lesson plans for public school music educators to use in their classrooms
• Develop a website that serves as both an educational resource and an interactive destination for all symphony information and services
• Increase opportunities for direct connection between our musicians, donors, and community

Listen to the overture! Explosions of brass. Sinuous lines from the upper strings. The basses and cellos provide rhythmic motion while woodwinds and percussion add colors and punctuation to the phrases.

How can you help?

Consider becoming one of our Distinguished Performance Circle or Maestro Circle sponsors! Take pride in funding a very specific aspect of what makes a symphony orchestra unique – one instrumental voice joining others to create the miracle of sound that is an orchestra. Perhaps you played violin in school and would like to sponsor one of our string players. Perhaps you have always had an affinity for the sound of the clarinet. The musicians always appreciate having a sponsors name next to theirs in the program and you can continue the concert experience by meeting them at one of the post-concert receptions in the Capitol Lounge.

If either of the above is more than you are comfortable with at this time, please consider one of our Symphony Circle memberships. We have several levels of sponsorship that can easily fit within any budget. These donations are also listed in our concert program in order to celebrate the contributions you have made.

If you would like your funding to have a more lasting impact on the WSO, consider the Memorial Circle and the Encore Society:

• The Dr. Daniel E. Hill Memorial Circle Fund was started by his wife Daphne in 2008 after Dr. Hill’s untimely death. The contributions are used to create a perpetual memorial recognizing his love of the WSO.
• New Memorial Circle Funds may be started with an initial contribution of $3,000 or more; they continue to grow with the contributions of others.
• Members of the Encore Society choose to make a bequest from their estate that supplements the WSO’s endowment and provides funding for many years to come. Please contact the symphony office for more information.

The final chords strike as everyone – musicians and audience – slides toward the edge of their seats. In one final triumphant moment, the performance comes to a close. The audience is standing and applauding. The musicians are standing in acknowledgment. The conductor is accepting accolades and presenting the soloists. For these moments everyone is thrilled to be part of such an amazing experience… to connect and celebrate the joy of beautiful music!

Let us take a moment to say a hearty thank you to our marvelous donors for your support! Your donations are our budget and without your continued funding, the symphony simply cannot continue to exist. The musicians and board members have already provided their own generous contributions for next season! They love this organization so much that they are willing to put their own money back into it. Let us hear from you as soon as possible so that we can plan the most vibrant season we have yet experienced. We have many exciting ideas, but without your funding the community will never be able to experience them.

Sincerely,
